Is OA Right For Me?

Many of us came to OA wondering if we could get help with our body image or weight. We knew our relationship with food was irrational. Some of us were so obsessed with food that our lives had become unmanageable.

In OA, we found a fellowship of members who welcomed us. Members shared their experiences, their strength in how they worked the OA 12-Step Program, one day at a time to recover, and their hope for their lives flourishing in recovery.

Entering the program at different points in our lives, some of us were raising our families, going to college, looking for a job, working, getting divorced, or retiring. Some of us had distressing experiences as children, others happy. Some of us had suffered trauma that impacted our eating behaviors and body image. Many of us only knew we had a problem with food. Anyone with a desire to stop compulsive eating or to stop compulsive eating behavior is welcome in OA.

We admitted we were powerless over food, that our lives had become unmanageable.
- Step One, Overeaters Anonymous

Some of us came to OA when we were dealing with our food problems through diet plans/programs, treatment centers, bariatric surgery, therapy, and nutritional counseling. We needed additional support. Some members had been in other 12-Step fellowships and realized the need for another 12-Step program to help with their food addiction. Some of us came and left, while some of us came when everything else we tried failed. We found members who understood our problem and the 12-Step program that worked.

Our compulsive food behaviors have impacted our friendships, college assignments, work, relationships, family, self-image, and health. Our doctors told us that we were obese, anorexic, bulimic, had a binge eating disorder, body dysmorphia, and a list of other eating disorders. Some of us encountered orthopedic problems, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer associated with obesity. Some of us over-exercised till we damaged our bodies or under-ate to the point that we risked our lives. We binged and purged until we eroded our teeth, stomach, and esophagus.

Join us who have found love and understanding, the 9 Tools, and the 12-Step recovery program in OA.

There is a solution.
